A beginner's guide to car racing
Also called motor racing, car racing is simply the racing of cars for sport and is easily one of the most popular sports in the entire world. Many experts think car racing began not long after the world's first gasoline powered automobile was constructed and it's widely thought that the first ever world car race in 1894 by a French magazine called Le Petit Journal. The first car race track started in Paris and ended in Rouen and attracted major manufacturers like De Dion, Panhard and Peugeot and a plethora of private car owners. Although motor racing continued to grow in popularity over the years, it wasn't until the 1930s that the first pure racing automobiles were built, with exceptional performance vehicles from motor manufacturers like Auto Union and Bugatti completely changing the outlook of motor sports forever.
Racing events
There are numerous car racing events which each attract a different crowd and each have different rules and credentials. The FIA WTCC is one of the most exciting racing events in the jam packed motor sports diary. First devised in 1987, the WTCC series is held all over the world including locations like Great Britain, Japan, Morocco and Spain. Other successful motoring racing events include the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, the World Rally Championship and the European Touring Car Championship. The NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series are also two hugely popular car racing championships.
FIA Formula One World Championship
F1 motor racing is undoubtedly one of the most exhilarating sports events throughout the world. The sport's origins come from post World War Two and culminated in rules being drawn up, with the first F1 races happening in 1950. While the championship takes in various across the globe, there is always one certainty - the motorcars and the firms who invest in them. The landmark motor car companies are Ferrari, Williams and McLaren although recently Red Bull and Jordan have raced successfully. The real stars have always been the drivers, from the audacious racing of Nelson Piquet through to the exciting Jim Clark.
